'It's like they never miss a pass': The Swans' Galbraith resumes battle with City.

Ethan Galbraith can't help but smile as he remembers the nail-biting dying seconds of his team's epic comeback win against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. That match wrapped up with Galbraith picking up a fan's glasses amid the on-field celebration.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith cracked the upright with a long-range shot from distance, and his teammate immediately slammed home the loose ball before racing off toward the East Stand to celebrate, with supporters swarming the players.

Remarkable Recovery

The result sealed an incredible turnaround given Swansea had been behind 2-0 during the second half. Amid the celebrations, there was some minor mishaps. Galbraith explained, "There was a spectator sort of calling out and Josh Key and I were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we noticed the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as footballers but we're individuals, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The victory booked a next round match at home against the Premier League champions on Wednesday, opponents Galbraith pushed hard at the equivalent round of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. The athletic midfielder had an excellent perspective when his former team took the lead in spectacular fashion, with a teammate's first-time shot from about long distance going in via the woodwork and the opposition keeper. It seems unfair that it was deemed an own goal.

"You would have expected they would've given it to him for having a go from that range," says Galbraith, who began the game centrally before moving to right defensive wing after Orient changed formation. That meant competing with the England international, with whom he exchanged jerseys, and the attacker was among the opposition who complimented the way his former team played positively.

City's Quality

"Athletically they are exceptional but even the simple things and routine actions, they can just perform consistently," Galbraith says. "It feels like they never miss a pass and they are adept at dictate and slow down a game. You can feel you're holding your own and then without warning they will just fizz a pass through a line without you even seeing. You have to be alert every second of the game. It requires a strong mentality and focus just to stay in the game."

Swansea Move

The club pushed to sign Galbraith in January and fought off rivals to sign him in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He established himself as a fans' favourite across multiple campaigns at Leyton Orient and has swiftly achieved similar status in south Wales. At the London club he reunited with Richie Wellens, who four years ago gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in professional games on loan at a League One side from Old Trafford. Then came a loan at lower division the Manchester club, before he moved on from Manchester United.

Development Path

"I was probably a somewhat inexperienced going into men's football. I think many athletes would say youth team games is entirely separate. Sometimes it appears possession is exchanged without real physicality. There are limited tackles or duels. Once you start playing men's games you have to adapt rapidly."

International Recognition

He has demonstrated that growth for his team and nation, excelling for his national side, who remain in contention for the international competition next summer via the playoffs and for whom he has been selected in the last several matches, including home and away fixtures against the German national team. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's former international manager, paid him the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he handles the football and his ability to spot a decisive through ball.

Early Days

It has been a remarkable path for the player from the local area in Glengormley, just outside Belfast, who used to see his father, his father, also a central player, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Red Devils Debut

Galbraith's sole appearance for Manchester United came in Central Asia in 2019, a continental tournament trip to Astana, where they competed on an synthetic surface and the arena covering was shut owing to the weather of freezing cold. "It was a long trip and it was cold out there," he says, smiling. "The preceding week, myself and quite a few of the young lads worked out jointly, so that assisted our preparation. Just to join the main group and make an appearance at the end was amazing."

Departing Old Trafford

How difficult was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he joined from Linfield aged 16? "This turned out relatively straightforward, because I got to the stage where I knew I wouldn't break through at first-team level. I'm extremely thankful for the years at the club but it reached a stage where I thought I had to take a different path, join a smaller club and play professional soccer. Now I'm steadily working my way back up."

Life in Swansea

It is mid-afternoon at the club's training ground but Galbraith has a commitment at late afternoon: a road rules assessment, another progress toward getting on the road. Prior to relocating to Sketty, the 24-year-old was a regular in Swansea's nicknamed player transport, a minibus driven by academy staff, Pete and Howard, which ferries players to and from practice and games.

"I travel with Gonçalo Franco, Ronald, Malick Yalcouyé – the Swedish defender used to be in it but has started driving. It's nice to interact with the lads but I'm aiming to be the subsequent individual out of the minibus and on the road. The Portuguese player enjoys practical jokes; he's constantly causing mischief."

Supporter Connections

While playing for Orient, Galbraith would blend in with supporters on the Tube after beginning his trip at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
